The security software firm Symantec Inc found that Canada ranked 3rd globally for number of 'data breaches' in 2016, out of 19 in total.
Symantec Inc, the makers of Norton antivirus, has published its annual "Internet Security Threat Report" (ISTR).
As well, Canada is the 4th most attacked country by ransomware, which holds users’ data hostage until money is paid. Overall worldwide ransomware demands raised 266%, with the average ransom per victim growing from $294 CAD in 2015 to $1,077 in 2016 and counting.
Canada also ranked fourth globally for the most identities exposed by data breaches, with more than 72 million identities revealed overall.
Here are some other statistics from the report:
- Canada came in at the tenth spot in the world as the source of malware and phishing
- Mining was the industry in Canada that encountered the most spam, with just under 62 percent of e-mails filtered by Symantec coming from this field
- The highest malware rate in Canada was experienced in the agriculture, forestry and fishing industries, with 1 in 41 emails containing a harmful attachment or link
- 1 in 131 emails contained a malicious link or attachment in 2016 – the highest rate in five years
Symantec noted that many organizations reported that they only up to 40 cloud apps, when in reality the number often reaches closer to 1,000. As a result of this growing reliance on cloud services, Symantec says that this will be the “next frontier” on which cyber attacks are launched.
